Los Dos Deudores
Matthew / Mateo 18:21-35
After a teaching about what to do when a believer sins against you, Peter had a question:
Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?”
“No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!
¿Siete veces? No siete veces respondió Jesús, sino setenta veces siete.
Why did Peter say 7 times?
He hoped to sound extremely loving by suggesting forgiving a repentant brother up to seven times when three times was the accepted limit taught by many Jewish rabbis of that time.
Who is keeping track? Unlimited Forgiveness / Perdón Ilimitado
The parables reveal the principles of the King and the nature of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Settle accounts: As all humanity one day must stand before God.
Each member of humanity is in deep dept with God.
Ten thousand talents: Today in modern value of 10,000 talents is $3.48 billion USD.
The figure clearly represents an unpayable debt.
1 denarii = 1 day wage
1 talent = 6,000 denarii – 20 years of daily work
10,000 talents = 60,000,000 denarii - 200,000 years of labor
What should be done?
According to Roman law wife and children were a part of a man’s property. Everything must be sold!
Lord I will do the impossible:
Master have patience with me, and I will pay you all: He spoke as if all he needed were patience; that if he were given enough time, he could actually pay this massive debt.
How could he pay it all? It was impossible! Frequently we think like that: That by doing a few good things we can pay our enormous debt with God.
Compassion, Mercy, Forgiveness:
The master showed mercy prompted by compassion, forgiving a debt that obviously could never be repaid – despite whatever promises the servant made.
The Principles of the King and Nature His Kingdom - Compassionate, Merciful, Forgiving, Loving King
Psalm 51:1-2 Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Lk 23:34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
1Jn 1:9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
Matt 26:27-28 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.
He went out not with joy, but to get in a fight.
Grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. / 100 denarii = $5,800 today
28 “But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment.
He begged for a little more time. Be patient with me, and I will pay it.
29 “His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded.
But he would not wait. “He put him in prison”.
The unwillingness to forgive.
30 But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full.
Thank God for the “intercessors”.
31 “When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened.
But still more strongly does the parable point to THE HATEFULNESS OF AN UNFORGIVING SPIRIT.
The man was not softened by the remission of his own great debt.
Sometimes forgiveness doesn’t change people’s hearts.
32 Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ 34 Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt.
And this is what the parable teaches us.
*The king tries to teach the servant one of the principles of his kingdom.
*The king teaches, not by word, but by deed, by actually forgiving the man his debt.
The King wishes for the servant to understand that he is to copy his king; that if his king has behaved to him like a father to his child, he must behave as a brother to his fellow-servants. So does God wish to teach us.
Eph 4:32 Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Don’t put yourself in prison by holding someone else by the throat and putting him also in prison.
Colo 3:12-13 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
35 “That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”
No need for you to keep track He does. Hebrews / Hebreos 10:30
For we know him who said, “I will take revenge; I will repay them back” He also said, “The Lord will judge his own people.”
The lesson is clear: we must practice the principles of our King and the nature of His Kingdom.
There is no room in the Christian life for revenge, retaliation, getting even or holding a grudge.
We love and forgive as the King has done for us.

Luke 10:25-35
In chap 10 we see the Lord chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit. To heal the sick, and tell them, “The Kingdom of God is near you now.”
But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.
*Two questions – from a lawyer of the law. Teacher, expert of the Law
*Purpose of the question 1:
To test – to trap Jesus (probar) He was critical and didn’t like the message of grace from Jesus.
1. Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?
He was expecting to hear: Just Believe in Me!
26 Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”
27 The man answered, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.” And “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
28 “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” / 28 ¡Correcto! — le dijo Jesús. ¡Haz eso y vivirás!
*Purpose of the question 2:
The man wanted to justify his actions. (justificar sus acciones)
Why he needs to Justify himself? If you Love God (perfectly) – Obey God = love your neighbor.
2. Who is my neighbor? / ¿Y quién es mi prójimo? (vecino)
Who do I have to love like I love me?
29 The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Matthew 5:43
You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy.
This parable purpose was to act like a mirror and show this man you are not as good as you think you are
The point of this parable was to show the man and us that we are not good Samaritans.
This man was being told that the only way to go to heaven by his own admission is to be so good and to love God so perfectly and to love your neighbor so selflessly that you love him more than you love yourself and who the neighbor is? Every person you have ever heated.
The purpose of the story was so that the lawyer with desperation would realize it’s IMPOSSIBLE.
Who then can be saved?
Romans 3:20 For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.
36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. 37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
Serve, give, help, compassionate, merciful, love others and LOVE GOD.

- This parable is the most popular. (incomprendida)
- But the most misunderstood and misinterpreted of all the parables that Jesus uses to teach.
- The words Good Samaritan are even part of our language. (Someone doing something kind for a stranger)
- Many think that is about justice, social justice, not even about good deeds. (you miss the point)
